In my old life as a gestalt therapist, I continually asked my clients "what are you aware of?" The answer was usually something like "I'm aware of my sore back," or "I'm aware of my sadness," or "I'm aware of thinking about my mother," Often the content of the session would follow from what the client said, so for example we might explore the sore back, the sadness or the relationship with mother. What we did not focus on, was the awareness itself. The client was learning to focus on everything he was not. And that's what we focus on when we tell the story that we call our life, everything that we are not.
It is only when we realise that we are subject and not object, that we are conscious awareness Itself, that we discover that we have no problems. Awareness can have no problems since it's nature is complete emptiness and it is in this that an entire universe seems to arise.
